It's On You

I'm not telling you anything new or novel. You know this just as well as I do. I can build out the best program, the most precise meal plan, help you pick the right supplements, and everything in between. And it'll do absolutely zero good. Because my guidance only works to the level that you implement it. But if you would, just humor me for a second, help me try to understand. Because I'm a person who has ALWAYS strived to be better. I've always wanted to be stronger, look better, feel better. I even ached to have the intangible benefits that come along with being in shape. I wanted to have confidence and charisma. I wanted everything that I knew came with being in shape. So why don't others want it? We all know that it comes as a byproduct of getting in shape. Why don't people go for it? Why don't people stay the course? Why do so many people say they need "motivation" to get in shape? But that's a different topic for a different time I suppose. The core tenant here is that it's on you. You have to own this process. You have to push the workouts, eat on plan, do the steps, and live the lifestyle. I will always do my job. I'll make sure that each client and athlete has what they need. I will aid in keeping folks on track. But I can't MAKE anyone do anything.
You will fall into one of two camps...
Camp A: They get results. Period. But for the sake of the blog, I'll tell you why. Look at how they operate. They follow the plan, they eat on plan, they prioritize the little things like water and sleep. But they do all these things with all their heart. They WANT to be better. Do you remember being a kid and wanting something? Like a toy? You just YEARNED for it deep in your core. It was a raw and visceral feeling to have it. You'd beg your parents, mow yards, clean house, whatever it took. That's how these people feel and behave.
Camp B: You want to lose inches off your waist. You want the love handles and the arm fat gone. But your friends, who are also not in shape, want to go get Mexican food on Friday... can't miss that. Eggs, oats, protein, fruit... nah, let's get a frappe and a bagel for breakfast. The heavier weights were a little challenging, let's drop the load. Somebody brought donuts to the office, it would be rude to not be grateful and indulge, right? In this camp, "life happens" to you daily. Something is always more calling than chicken, rice, and veggies. A 30 minute at home workout doesn't carry the same value as watching whatever show is currently trending.
if it sounds like a call out, it is...
Look, I love and care about people. And even though one of my slogans is "strength and kindness" that 'kindness' part doesn't mean I'm gonna give of Mr. Rogers, soft spoken, mild-mannered, youth pastor vibes all the time. You need to be better. Your friends, if that's what they really are, should encourage your journey. instead of feeding your complacency. That Mexican restaurant will still be open in 8 months when you've lost 25 pounds. You can still get that morning Starbucks. Just change your order and eat real food instead of just drinking 800 calories of sugar. It is ok to struggle and sweat in your training, that challenge fortifies you over time. Lean into the process. Embrace it. Do. The. Work.
I say all this to say...
I want it for you. I want you to know how good being fit feels. I want you to know what being strong feels like. I want you to be able to take off your shirt and not be ashamed or embarrassed, or worse yet, complacent and indifferent. When deep down you know you could be better. I want it for you more than you want it for you. And I can absolutely help you get it... but I cannot do it for you. It's on you.
